Drug Screening > Types of Testing

Drug screening first gained prominence in the 1980s. At the time, testing was required for certain federal employees and all jobs regulated by the Department of Transportation. Employers were also encouraged to test professional drivers and people in safety-sensitive jobs, such as those operating construction equipment.

Since then, drug testing has become common place, not only in government-mandated jobs, but also with businesses, organizations and individuals. As the advantages of a well run drug-free program become apparent, more schools, churches, sports organizations and small businesses are embracing this invaluable tool.

Drug screening remains one of the most effective ways to maintain a safe environment and serves as a powerful deterrent. When you consider the impact on the safety, productivity, performance, and overall team morale, it just doesn't add up to leave your organization or business unprotected.

Mandatory - Also known as DOT, NIDA, and SAMHSA. This type of testing is regulated by the Department of Transportation and defined in DOT 49CFR Part 40. (http://www.dot.gov/ost/dapc)

Non-Mandatory - This includes all other drug and alcohol tests not regulated by DOT 49CFR Part 40. Non-mandatory tests are generally administered to workers that are not required to meet DOT employment conditions (or mandates). However, at METSCheck, Inc., we still use the same stringent collection standards required by mandatory testing, but without the additional paperwork and lab work.
