Why E-Verify?
The new E-Verify has become the butt of jokes lately as some elected state officials have begun to pan the credibility of this federal program. But that public profession of concern doesn’t get employers off the hook in the event of a federal audit.
E-Verify works by allowing participating employers to electronically compare employee information taken from the Form I-9 (the paper-based employment eligibility verification form used for all new hires) against more than 449 million records in SSA's database and more than 80 million records in DHS' immigration databases.
Currently E-Verify is a voluntary procedure for ensuring that your business only employs workers who are eligible to work in the U.S. Of course federal contractors and subcontractors are required to use the program which is slowly gaining ground in some states as mandatory.
If your business operates in an area or provides a service which makes you highly susceptible to receiving applications from non-U.S. workers, E-Verify should be a standard practice for protecting your business. Once you elect to participate, you must screen every hire.
Just remember: E-Verify is a post-hire screen. You cannot screen an employee until they are hired, and if they come back with an invalid SSN, your only recourse is to send them to the Social Security office. Negative results on an E-Verify screen are not grounds for termination.
Liars are Becoming Bolder with their Padded Resumes
Just when you thought you staff was savvy enough to ferret out even the most well-crafted misinformation, applicants have found a new way to lie about their work history. It seems a new line of entrepreneurs have cropped up on the internet, offering to provide fabricated work histories, office phone numbers and even references for those made-up positions.
